Swim Lessons

Swim lessons will be offered again in 2010. Our sign-up procedures and fees are still in development. Typically we offer sessions for two week intervals with two sessions held each summer. Watch this space for the latest information about swim lessons in 2010.

Sign-up sheets for lessons will most likely be posted at the pool on the bulletin board in the beginning of June. Please sign up in person! Try to place your child in the appropriate level of instruction based on his or her skill level.

Our Lesson Levels

Water Babies – 6 to 36 months – This requires parent/guardian to accompany child in the water. Simple water acquaintance & safety - Water adjustment by getting wet & water entry – Blowing bubbles, prone float, & back float. Child learns to interact with the water by having fun – For older children – holding breath, grabbing the wall, & back floats – Underwater exploration – opening eyes, bobbing, & jumping in to the water.

Tadpoles Level I – Pre-school Aged – Child is potty trained & can be separated from parents – For children with little or no water experience – Will learn to submerge face, blow bubbles, enter & exit water safely using ladder or steps – Completely submerge head below water & blow bubbles – front & back float with support – Recover from front & back float to standing position with support – Change directions – roll over from front to back float – Will work on combined limb actions on front & back float – Glide in water.

Tadpoles Level II – Enter & exit water safely using ladder or steps – Submerge entire head and retrieve object at arms length – Front & back float without support for three seconds – Recover from front & back float to standing position without support – Change directions front to back float without support – Swim short distance on front & back to instructor using arm & leg action – Jumps from the side, glides (front & back), push off side and swims with combination of arm & leg action for half the width of the pool – swims underwater & independent of physical assistance – Use of kickboards to practice kicking

Seahorse – Ages 4- 6 years – Enter water by jumping from side – opens eyes underwater & retrieves object from bottom of the pool – Front & back float without support for 10 seconds – Front & back glides with kick two body lengths & recovers to standing position – Treads water for 5- 10 seconds, combined rhythmic breathing with leg & arm action for 15 feet – Will learn to jump in deep water, front & back glides with kick & change from vertical to horizontal position – Repetition on front crawl stroke – Introduction of butterfly kick – Use of kickboards to practice kicking

Otter – 6 – 8 years – Beginning swimming class – This class will move at its own pace through the various swimming strokes – child must master skills in Seahorse before advancement to this level – Use of kickboards to practice kicking

Marlin – Ages 8 and Up – Pass the Deep Water Test (DWT) – Swim one lap of the pool & tread or float for two minutes unassisted. Advancement to basic swim strokes – Free Style, Breast Stroke, Back Stroke, Butterfly

All children completing a two-week session will receive a
Certificate of Completion for their level of instruction!
