The swim team cannot operate without lots of volunteers.  Because we are a small team, we hope that every family can participate at each meet to help it run smoothly.  There are so many different ways you can help out - I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy doing!

The volunteers are organized by the Swim Team Committee.  We are thrilled to have our entire 2012 swim team commitee returning for the 2013 season.  They are:
Karen Sawka - Coordinator (main contact for parents and coaches) ksawka@comcast.net
Greg Sawka - Swim Team Liason (SSL and Oaklands Pool Board)
Jennifer McCurnin - Officials & Reporting
Jen McFadden - Snack Bar
Allison McMahon - Team suit/caps/clothing
Martha Barrier, Greg Sawka & Chris Hamilton - Hiring Team
Linda Laurenceau - Volunteer Coordinator
Laura Frangiadis - Socials & Equipment
Teresa Hanrahan - Treasurer
Jeff Lang & Greg Sawka - Records

Practices

We ask parents to remind swimmers how to behave during practice.  If there are issues, please work with the coaches to help practice run smoothly.

Home meets

We need lots of volunteers during home meets:
  • Set-Up: we need people to put lane lines in, backstroke flags, set up chairs, etc.
  • Parking captain: directs visiting team to our parking lot, and our team to the adjacent lot or the neighborhood streets.
  • Starter: starts all of the races; requires 2 years experience (position requires training)
  • Referee: works with the stroke and turn judges to make sure people are swimming the correct strokes (position requires training)
  • 4 stroke and turn judges (2 per half; position requires training)
  • 10 timers (5 per half): paired with a parent from the other team, they time swimmers as they race
  • Head Timer (1 per half): supports the timers; serves as a check and balance
  • Place Judge (1 per half): sits at the end of the pool and declares who has placed first, second, third, etc.
  • Runners (2 per half): run time sheets and place sheets to the scoring table
  • Clerk of Course (1 per half): checks kids when they are lined up on the bench for their races
  • Announcer: announces races, winners of racers, etc.
  • Scorers (2 per half): they take the place sheets and time sheets and record the results of the races.
  • Snack Bar (8 per meet): this is our main way to generate income for the team.
  • Break-down: we need people to take down the lane lines, the backstroke flags, and put the chairs back to normal.
  • Reporter: We need someone to report the score both to the suburban swim league and to the News Journal.

Away meets

We also need support at our away meets:
  • 4 stroke and turn judges (2 per half; position requires training)
  • 10 timers (5 per half): paired with a parent from the other team, they time swimmers as they race
  • Place Judge (1 per half): sits at the end of the pool and declares who has placed first, second, third, etc
  • Clerk of Course (1 per half): checks kids when they are lined up on the bench for their races
  • Scorers (2 per half): they take the place sheets and time sheets and record the results of the races.
